Seeking a fourth mandate to serve the residents of District 2/Vous pouvez compter sur mon expérience !

Twelve years ago I was first elected to city council with 92 percent of the vote in District 2.   I have a long record of extensive involvement in our community as a participant in municipal programming, a volunteer in the Parks and Recreation programs, a journalist and a consultant for city and borough hall.  I grew up in Côte Saint-Luc, went to elementary and high school here and have lived in District 2 for over 20 years. Becoming a member of city council was a logical step for me.
With students at Bialik High School.
Being an elected official is a privilege and there is no greater accomplishment than introducing new ideas and concepts and resolving important issues to the satisfaction of your constituents. I am proud of my record in terms of maintaining a regular dialogue with the electorate, improving the state of local parks (Rembrandt and Isadore Goldberg), enhancing traffic safety at Kildare and Cavendish, Park Place, Ilan Ramon, Sir Walter Scott and Marc Chagall and working closely with the administrations of JPPS-Bialik and Beth Chabad on a wide array of projects.

Participating in our composting program.
In addition to my role on city council, I serve as the communications and marketing specialist for the English Montreal School Board and write for several publications including The Suburban, The Jewish Standard, Montreal Jewish Magazine and The Montrealer.  I am the founding editor of Inspirations Newspaper, which focuses on stories related to individuals with special needs.

With constituents Jason Ullmann and Brad Levine.
I work hard for my constituents. In 2005 I was the first city councillor to introduce Town Hall meetings at least once a year, where issues of specific relevance to people in my district could be discussed in detail. I do regular walkabouts in the District and maintain a daily dialogue with constituents in person, by telephone and via e-mail and social media.  My blog at www.mikecohen.ca  serves as a “go to” platform for my constituents to stay up to date on important matters related to the District and the city at large.

I am proud of the work I have done with the portfolios I have held to benefit residents of all ages:

For Library and Culture,  I helped develop an enhanced communications and marketing plan, introduced the Library Express at the Aquatic and Community Centre, spearheaded a fundraising campaign to purchase a new Grand Piano, enhanced the role of our team of volunteer ambassadors, approached and arranged for many authors to  promote their books at public lectures, chaired 50th anniversary celebrations and activities, encouraged the creation of the teen advisory group and courses for seniors to learn how to use iPads,   oversaw the continuation of our successful used book sales and much more.

At a local authors event at the library which I helped organize.
For Animal Protection, I continued to oversee the important work of the Cote Saint-Luc Cats Committee’s Trap, Neuter, Release and Adopt program, introduced a by-law requiring outdoor cats to be licensed, engaged and communicated with officials from the SPCA and animal rights activists from across the country, initiated a consultation process with dog owners, created a Dog Run Advisory Group, arranged for the Dog Run on Mackle Road to be sub-divided for small and large dogs, worked with the councillor for District 4 to ensure that the construction of a second city Dog Run would be approved by council, created a consensus among council to allow dogs on leashes in a limited number of parks and served as a contact for all pet owners in the community.
With Dr. Marlene Kalin at the CSL Hospital for Animals.
For Sponsorship, I introduced a process whereby corporate sponsors were obtained for events and activities by all departments, adopted a procedure for any future naming rights projects, met with business leaders in the community to assess their interest in supporting our projects and created the Pierre Brunet McDonald’s Bursary Program to assist families in financial need to register for Parks and Recreation programs.

Pierre Brunet presents a cheque for a new program devoted to families in financial need.
For Interreligious and Intercommunity Affairs, I created the city’s first-ever committee  containing representation from religious and community groups operating within our municipality, met individually with community leaders and maintained contact with leaders from outside our community.

With leaders from St. Richard's Church.
For Communications and Public Affairs, I played a leading role in the initial creation of this department in 2005, oversaw the development of our website, spearheaded an agreement with Kazoo Digital for the introduction of two electronic notice boards in the city and adopted a media relations and response policy.

I chaired and co-chaired Canada Day festivities on two occasions, selecting the theme, activities and soliciting sponsorship.
Honouring our soldiers at Canada Day.
I chaired the Maison Fleuries contest the past two years, revising the judging and award selection process and introducing the selection of an honouree for the ceremonies.

I have chaired the annual Golf Classic since 2006, bringing total participation from a low of 48 people at one point to a sold out affair of more than 100 the past four years while further raising the profile of the event by naming an honouree.

I chaired the Human Rights Walkway ceremony honouring the late baseball legend Jackie Robinson, righteous gentile Raoul Wallenberg and the late Judge Antonio Lamar, complete with education programs for schools.

I chaired the 2017 VE Day (Victory in Europe) ceremony, holding the event at a school and focusing the attention on a learning experience for young students.

I am proud to have brought the water play area for young families to Rembrandt Park.
District 2 encompasses Merrimac, Rembrandt., Kildare  (between Rembrandt and Marc Chagall), Sir Walter Scott,  Ilan Ramon, Marc Chagall, Mackle  (between Cavendish and Brandeis),  Quartier Cavendish Mall,  Jubilee, Park Place, Cavendish (Manoir Montefiore, Manoir Camelia, L’Excelsior) and Honoré-de-Balzac.

I am proud of my achievements and the relationships I have developed with my constituents and I look forward to sharing my goals and objectives with constituents during this upcoming election campaign.
