It has been a joy campaigning with young students

Door to door campaigning for the upcoming Côte Saint-Luc election has been an enlightening experience, notably with the addition of a number of Bialik High School students.

Two years ago I began a student intern program with  Bialik High School, working with youngsters and allowing them to engage in various projects related to local commerce. Now they are getting a firsthand look at the municipal election process.

Here is what Lonny Fineberg, Olivia’s dad, had to say after we met residents at the Parkside 21 town house complex on Rembrandt and Kildare Road: “I wanted to extend my heartfelt thanks for an incredibly inspiring evening going door to door campaigning . It was a unique experience and I truly appreciated the opportunity to be part of it. Your teaching, mentoring, and passion for public service left a strong impression on my 12-year-old daughter. She was deeply inspired and motivated by your dedication and enthusiasm. It's not every day that young minds get to witness such commitment firsthand, and I know this experience will have a lasting impact on her.”

During my visit to the apartment building on The Avenue, it was remarkable to watch 15 year old Hoffman engage with all of the residents.  When we met a stock broker , Noah seemed quite familiar with patterns in the market. Next came a software engineer. Again, Noah had comments about the different kinds of systems available.  That is what door to door is all about: engaging in conversation.

It has been wonderful to watch these teens learn and better understand what it takes to be an elected official.

La campagne porte-à-porte pour les prochaines élections à Côte Saint-Luc a été une expérience enrichissante, notamment grâce à la participation d'un certain nombre d'élèves du lycée Bialik.

Il y a deux ans, j'ai lancé un programme de stages avec le lycée Bialik, qui permet à des jeunes de participer à divers projets liés au commerce local. Aujourd'hui, ils découvrent de près le processus électoral municipal.

Voici ce que Lonny Fineberg, le père d'Olivia, avait à dire après notre rencontre avec les résidents du complexe immobilier Parkside 21, situé à l'angle de Rembrandt et Kildare Road : « Je tiens à vous remercier sincèrement pour cette soirée incroyablement inspirante passée à faire du porte-à-porte pour votre campagne. Ce fut une expérience unique et j'ai vraiment apprécié d'avoir pu y participer. Votre enseignement, votre mentorat et votre passion pour le service public ont fortement impressionné ma fille de 12 ans. Elle a été profondément inspirée et motivée par votre dévouement et votre enthousiasme. Ce n'est pas tous les jours que les jeunes esprits ont l'occasion d'être témoins d'un tel engagement, et je sais que cette expérience aura un impact durable sur elle. »

Lors de ma visite à l'immeuble d'appartements sur The Avenue, j'ai été impressionné de voir Hoffman, 15 ans, discuter avec tous les résidents.  Lorsque nous avons rencontré un courtier en bourse, Noah semblait très familier avec les tendances du marché. Puis vint un ingénieur en informatique. Là encore, Noah avait des commentaires à faire sur les différents types de systèmes disponibles.  C'est ça, le porte-à-porte : engager la conversation.

C'était merveilleux de voir ces adolescents apprendre et mieux comprendre ce qu'il faut pour être un élu.

In the 20 years I have served as the city councillor for District 2 in Côte Saint-Luc, taking promenades on Ilan Ramon Crescent has always been a distinct pleasure.

The street is named after Ilan Ramon, the former Israeli astronaut who died in the Columbia Space Shuttle in 2003.  An encased photo of him appears mid-way through the block.

I went door to door on Ilan Ramon on Sept. 11 with my friend and most reliable point man on the street, Frank Palucci.  Joining us was my newest student intern from Bialik High School, Liam Benamron.  Frank is a special person who takes great pride in the area. Liam and  I were astounded how he literally knew the history of each family as we climbed their steps. He is also an incredible  contact for me, not only on Ilan Ramon, but the Sir Walter Scott apartments as well.

 Frank  wakes up early and goes to sleep late. He keeps his eyes on passersby and takes tremendous pride in his beautiful garden. Sometimes I almost feel as if we are tag team partners. One of my biggest challenges in recent years has been the state of a vacant lot on Sir Walter Scott, right next to  Frank’s house.

The owner of the land originally  planned to build two to four homes there. However, a groundbreaking never occurred. Instead, he used the area as a dumping ground, placing a dumpster and building materials there. The grass was not cut on a regular basis either.  I worked tirelessly with our Urban Planning Department to have this issue resolved. Eventually,  we sought and received a court date. Last week the owner and I connected. I explained to him that these materials simply had to be removed and that it would be advantageous to do so before legal proceedings commenced.  Earlier this week,  the container was taken away as well as most (not all) if the building materials.  I hope now the land can be sold and new homes can be built there. I wish to thank the owner, Ron Reiter, for  resolving the conflict well before the  winter. This was a promise I made to constituents when I began this campaign and proud to say, “Mission Accomplished.”

As we knocked on doors, many people were upset with the snow removal last winter, particularly during a brutal February storm when Ilan Ramon Crescent was completely blocked to drivers because our sub-contractors did not do they job. I informed the residents that we have not renewed our contract with that company and that our city’s Public Works Department will  do so instead. Another family wanted to know why the snow is pushed to their side of the street, not the other. I promised to investigate.à

It was also nice to meet some new families on the street.

Ilan Ramon Crescent is the home to beautiful homes and nice people. I am proud to be their representative.

Au cours des 20 années où j'ai occupé le poste de conseiller municipal du district 2 à Côte Saint-Luc, me promener sur le croissant Ilan Ramon a toujours été un plaisir particulier.

La rue porte le nom d'Ilan Ramon, l'ancien astronaute israélien décédé dans la navette spatiale Columbia en 2003.  Une photo encadrée de lui est affichée au milieu du pâté de maisons.

Le 11 septembre, j'ai fait du porte-à-porte sur Ilan Ramon avec mon ami et homme de confiance dans la rue, Frank Palucci.  Nous étions accompagnés de mon tout nouveau stagiaire de l'école secondaire Bialik, Liam Benamron.  Frank est une personne spéciale qui est très fière de son quartier. Liam et moi avons été stupéfaits de voir à quel point il connaissait littéralement l'histoire de chaque famille lorsque nous montions les marches de leur escalier. Il est également un contact incroyable pour moi, non seulement pour Ilan Ramon, mais aussi pour les appartements Sir Walter Scott.

 Frank se lève tôt et se couche tard. Il observe les passants et est extrêmement fier de son magnifique jardin. J'ai parfois l'impression que nous sommes des partenaires de tag team. L'un de mes plus grands défis ces dernières années a été l'état d'un terrain vacant sur Sir Walter Scott, juste à côté de la maison de Frank. Le propriétaire du terrain avait initialement prévu d'y construire deux à quatre maisons. Cependant, les travaux n'ont jamais commencé. Au lieu de cela, il a utilisé la zone comme dépotoir, y plaçant une benne à ordures et des matériaux de construction. L'herbe n'était pas non plus coupée régulièrement. J'ai travaillé sans relâche avec notre service d'urbanisme pour résoudre ce problème. Finalement, nous avons demandé et obtenu une date d'audience. La semaine dernière, le propriétaire et moi-même nous sommes rencontrés. Je lui ai expliqué que ces matériaux devaient simplement être enlevés et qu'il serait avantageux de le faire avant le début de la procédure judiciaire. En début de semaine, la benne a été enlevée, ainsi que la plupart (mais pas la totalité) des matériaux de construction. J'espère que le terrain pourra désormais être vendu et que de nouvelles maisons pourront y être construites. Je tiens à remercier le propriétaire, Ron Reiter, d'avoir résolu le conflit bien avant l'hiver. C'était une promesse que j'avais faite à mes électeurs lorsque j'ai commencé cette campagne et je suis fier de pouvoir dire « mission accomplie ».

Lorsque nous avons fait du porte-à-porte, de nombreuses personnes étaient mécontentes du déneigement de l'hiver dernier, en particulier lors d'une violente tempête en février qui avait complètement bloqué Ilan Ramon Crescent aux automobilistes parce que nos sous-traitants n'avaient pas fait leur travail. J'ai informé les résidents que nous n'avions pas renouvelé notre contrat avec cette entreprise et que le service des travaux publics de notre ville s'en chargerait à la place. Une autre famille voulait savoir pourquoi la neige était poussée de leur côté de la rue et pas de l'autre. J'ai promis d'enquêter.

J'ai également eu le plaisir de rencontrer de nouvelles familles dans la rue.

Ilan Ramon Crescent abrite de belles maisons et des gens sympathiques. Je suis fier d'être leur représentant.

Door to Door Campaign on Park Place/Campagne de porte-à-porte à Park Place

On September 10 I focused my door to door attention on Park Place. Local Commerce interns Avery Hannon and Noah Galambos joined me.

People had a lot to say  as we proceeded with our door knocking. Many were grateful that the city removed a possible Public Safety station from being constructed on the greenspace at the corner of The Avenue and Park Place.  We heard a lot of concern about the pathway from Kildare Road towards Park Place and  some pedestrians behaving inappropriately.  The presence of rats the size of cats was raised by some homeowners. I call ask Public Works to see what can be done on this issue.

For me the biggest concern is an empty lot that has been kept in poor condition on a street with so many beautiful homes. The owner of the property   refuses to build there and he has not maintained the property  in an adequate fashion. I met the next door neighbours who are presently enhancing their front lawn.  Since they already have a  team of workers on site,  they have reached out to the neighbour  and asked if he wishes to enlist the same company to at the very least make the space presentable. I hope he concurs, otherwise I will ask our Urban Planning Department to exert the kind of pressure which was ultimately successful with the misuse of vacant land on Sir Walter Scott.

Finally,  at the very end of the street there is small island of greenspace with a tiny tree. In the winter, snow is dumped on this land. Young children play there and  that poses when vehicles past by and the kids are not always visible.

Le 10 septembre, j'ai concentré mes efforts de porte-à-porte à Park Place. Avery Hannon et Noah Galambos, stagiaires en commerce local, m'ont accompagné.

Les gens avaient beaucoup à dire  alors que nous frappions aux portes. Beaucoup étaient reconnaissants que la ville ait renoncé à la construction d'un poste de sécurité publique sur l'espace vert situé à l'angle de The Avenue et Park Place.  Nous avons entendu beaucoup d'inquiétudes concernant le chemin qui mène de Kildare Road à Park Place et le comportement inapproprié de certains piétons. Certains propriétaires ont également mentionné la présence de rats de la taille d'un chat. Je vais demander aux services publics de voir ce qui peut être fait à ce sujet.

Pour moi, la plus grande préoccupation est un terrain vague qui est maintenu en mauvais état dans une rue où se trouvent tant de belles maisons. Le propriétaire du terrain  refuse d'y construire et n'entretient pas le terrain  de manière adéquate. J'ai rencontré les voisins d'à côté qui sont en train d'améliorer leur pelouse. Comme ils ont déjà une équipe de travailleurs sur place, ils ont contacté le voisin et lui ont demandé s'il souhaitait faire appel à la même entreprise pour au moins rendre l'espace présentable. J'espère qu'il acceptera, sinon je demanderai à notre service d'urbanisme d'exercer le type de pression qui a finalement abouti à la réutilisation du terrain vacant de Sir Walter Scott.

Enfin,  tout au bout de la rue, il y a un petit îlot de verdure avec un petit arbre. En hiver, la neige est déversée sur ce terrain. Les jeunes enfants y jouent, ce qui pose un problème lorsque des véhicules passent et que les enfants ne sont pas toujours visibles.

Thanks to two of my Bialik High School student interns, Alexa Omer and Liana Lev-Ary, for accompanying me on my pre-election door to door visits on September 7. On this night we visited Les Cours Marc Chagall, a town house complex in my District 2.

It was nice to meet many familiar faces and some new ones. Michael Rosen, for one, is someone I have known since I was a teenager. Even though  he only lives down the road from me, it was the first time we have seen each other in about a year. Some of the newcomers wanted to know about the snow dump across the street and what can be done in the winter to control the noise. I explained that a number of years ago our Public Works Department agreed to build a de facto sound barrier, a.k.a. a large snowbank, soon after the first heavy snowfall. That has helped a lot. Sometimes sub-contractors bring new personnel to the job and they have not been properly briefed on the procedure. I got nice feedback on the much improved Isadore Goldberg Park and  the creation in this past mandate of Sheila Finestone Park. My interns were surprised to hear from one constituent who made it clear he has not intention to go out and vote in this election.

It was nice to see Michael Rosen.

Je remercie deux de mes stagiaires du lycée Bialik, Alexa Omer et Liana Lev-Ary, de m'avoir accompagné lors de mes visites porte-à-porte préélectorales le 7 septembre. Ce soir-là, nous avons rendu visite aux Cours Marc Chagall, un ensemble de maisons de ville situé dans mon quartier, le 2e arrondissement.

J'ai été ravi de retrouver de nombreux visages familiers et d'en découvrir de nouveaux. Michael Rosen, par exemple, est quelqu'un que je connais depuis mon adolescence. Même s'il habite tout près de chez moi, c'était la première fois que nous nous revoyions depuis environ un an. Certains nouveaux arrivants voulaient en savoir plus sur le dépôt de neige de l'autre côté de la rue et sur les mesures prises en hiver pour contrôler le bruit. Je leur ai expliqué qu'il y a plusieurs années, notre service des travaux publics avait accepté de construire une barrière acoustique de facto, c'est-à-dire un grand banc de neige, peu après les premières fortes chutes de neige. Cela a beaucoup aidé. Parfois, les sous-traitants font appel à de nouveaux employés qui n'ont pas été correctement informés de la procédure. J'ai reçu des commentaires positifs sur l'amélioration considérable du parc Isadore Goldberg et sur la création, au cours du dernier mandat, du parc Sheila Finestone. Mes stagiaires ont été surpris d'entendre un électeur déclarer clairement qu'il n'avait pas l'intention d'aller voter à cette élection.

The goal of the survey was to ask people to reflect what they think of their specific municipal councilors and what can be improved in order to provide them insight on how they can make their constituents happier. Another objective was to inform all the citizens of the upcoming election on November 2nd, 2025. 

A total of 30 participants were surveyed and presented with a series of questions. Although an effort was made to ask shoppers these questions, many kindly declined. As a result, participants sitting at the food court and IGA  became the primary sample upon which the results are based.

Door to Door Report: Condo Visit on Rembrandt Avenue

 I formally began my door to door campaign for the 2025 Municipal Election in Côte Saint-Luc. I wish to convey that I regularly circulate throughout my District 2 during my four year term. But in lead up to a vote, constituents do have particular questions. It is also an opportunity for me to catch up with people I may not have seen face to face recently and meet new residents.

My first stop was at 5680 Rembrandt, where I was warmly greeted by JP Amiel. He has headed the condo association there pre-dating the 20 years I have been on council and he has been a constant source of support and guidance.

Bena Singer, the ageless thespian who has resided here for decades, was pleased to share her concerns with me.  Like many people she wanted to know why there is no stop sign at the corner of Rembrandt and Kildare coming from Cavendish. I reminded her that we did place a stop sign across the street six years ago and that greatly improved the ability of motorists on Rembrandt to turn left.  A stop sign in the spot she asked about would have the effect of severely backing up traffic on Cavendish. As well, the transport codes deem the distance too short to qualify for a stop sign. It was JP Amiel, then working for the Montreal Transport Corporation, who assisted me in reaching out to the head office to have the bus stop near the corner of Rembrandt moved back and thereby removing a blindspot.

 J'ai officiellement lancé ma campagne de porte-à-porte pour les élections municipales de 2025 à Côte Saint-Luc. Je tiens à préciser que je me déplace régulièrement dans mon district 2 pendant mon mandat de quatre ans. Mais à l'approche d'un scrutin, les électeurs ont des questions particulières. C'est aussi l'occasion pour moi de retrouver des personnes que je n'ai pas vues récemment et de rencontrer de nouveaux résidents.

Ma première étape a été le 5680 Rembrandt, où j'ai été chaleureusement accueilli par JP Amiel. Il dirige l'association des copropriétaires depuis plus de 20 ans, soit avant même que je siège au conseil municipal, et il m'a toujours apporté son soutien et ses conseils.

Bena Singer, une comédienne intemporelle qui réside ici depuis des décennies, était ravie de me faire part de ses préoccupations.  Comme beaucoup de gens, elle voulait savoir pourquoi il n'y avait pas de panneau « Stop » à l'angle de Rembrandt et Kildare en venant de Cavendish. Je lui ai rappelé que nous avions installé un panneau « Stop » de l'autre côté de la rue il y a six ans et que cela avait considérablement amélioré la capacité des automobilistes à tourner à gauche sur Rembrandt. Un panneau « Stop » à l'endroit qu'elle mentionnait aurait pour effet de ralentir considérablement la circulation sur Cavendish. De plus, les codes de transport jugent la distance trop courte pour justifier l'installation d'un panneau d'arrêt. C'est JP Amiel, qui travaillait alors pour la Société de transport de Montréal, qui m'a aidé à contacter le siège social afin de faire reculer l'arrêt de bus situé près du coin de Rembrandt et d'éliminer ainsi un angle mort.

Seeking my sixth mandate as the city councillor for Côte Saint-Luc District 2/ Je solliciterai un sixieme mandat

Municipal elections will take place on Sunday, November 2, 2025. While the official campaign period begins on September 19, I like to tell my constituents that I am in re-election mode during the complete four years of my mandate.

I am seeking my sixth  term in office as the city councillor for District 2. Three times  I have won by acclamation and twice by over 80 percent of the vote.

I am very proud to have launched a student intern program with Bialik High School.

I grew up in Côte Saint-Luc and have lived in District 2 for over  30 years,  first winning election to council in 2005. I have a long record of extensive involvement in setting up municipal programs as a volunteer, as a journalist and communications specialist, as well as a city councillor.

District 2 encompasses Merrimac, Rembrandt., Kildare  (between Marc Chagall and Honoré Balzac), Sir Walter Scott,  Ilan Ramon, Marc Chagall, Mackle  (between Cavendish and Brandeis),  Quartier Cavendish Mall, Cavendish (Le Montefiore, Manoir Camelia, L’Excelsior), The Avenue,  Jubilee, Park Place, Honoré-de-Balzac..

Je suis heureux d'annoncer officiellement que je solliciterai un sixieme mandat en tant que conseiller municipal de Côte Saint-Luc pour le district 2 lors de l'élection municipale du 2 novembre 2025.

J’ai grandi à Côte-Saint-Luc, habité dans le district 2 pendant plus de 30 ans et été élu au conseil municipal en 2005.
