In recent days, prior to the Jewish New Year, I had the opportunity to spend some time during my door to door campaigning to do so in the company of two nine year olds: Matthew Genis and Max Blauer.
When I was first elected as the city councillor for District 2 in 2005, I promised to apply my journalistic skills to the job. For starters that meant writing a blog. I am pleased to announce that my web page, www.mikecohen.ca, is being completely relaunched. It is still in work in progress, but my election platform is indeed front and center for all to see and the campaign blog you are reading now is shown as a link on the homepage. In recent years I started a podcast (www.soundcloud.com/themikecohenpodcast) which now almost exclusively focuses on personalities and issues from Côte Saint-Luc. I have a specific Facebook page for council business only and last January I took to Instagram, where my following is now approaching 11,000 with strong engagement. There is a YouTube channel as well.

So back to Matthew and Max. I have known Matthew’s family for years. Last spring he got to skate on the Bell Centre ice before a Canadiens game. Soon after I went to his house and did an Instagram video with him. I also did a reel with his little sister Paige. As a result they both became curious about what a city councillor does. I see them frequently during my District 2 walkabouts, so I was pleased when Matthew’s parents offered to have him go door to door with me in their town house complex. He held my cards, rang the bells and listened attentively. I think it was a good education for this young JPPS student.

As for Max, his dad Dr. Evan Blauer sent me the good news that he had been selected for Team Quebec Brick. He’s been battling for over a year to make this team. There were more than 16 goalies who tried out and he was selected as the number one goalie for all of Quebec in his age group. For this year's winter season he will be playing Atom AA for the Northstars. Max is in Grade 4 at JPPS and also plays basketball and flag football. While we certainly had a nice talk about hockey, Max had seen my election posters on the poles and he was curious as to what a city councillor does. I had a nice chat with him about and when I left, seemed to have a good understanding.
In nine years, kids like Matthew and Max will be of voting age. That opportunity will come along a lot faster for my nine Bialik High School interns (and counting) , some of whom I have been working with for two years.
Ces derniers jours, avant le Nouvel An juif, j'ai eu l'occasion de passer un peu de temps pendant ma campagne de porte-à-porte en compagnie de deux enfants de neuf ans : Matthew Genis et Max Blauer.
Lorsque j'ai été élu pour la première fois conseiller municipal du district 2 en 2005, j'ai promis de mettre mes compétences journalistiques au service de ma fonction. Pour commencer, cela signifiait écrire un blog. Je suis heureux d'annoncer que ma page web, www.mikecohen.ca, fait l'objet d'une refonte complète. Elle est encore en cours d'élaboration, mais mon programme électoral est bien visible et le blog de campagne que vous êtes en train de lire apparaît sous forme de lien sur la page d'accueil. Ces dernières années, j'ai lancé un podcast (www.soundcloud.com/themikecohenpodcast) qui se concentre désormais presque exclusivement sur les personnalités et les enjeux de Côte Saint-Luc. . Revenons-en à Matthew et Max. Je connais la famille de Matthew depuis des années. Au printemps dernier, il a eu la chance de patiner sur la glace du Centre Bell avant un match des Canadiens. Peu après, je me suis rendu chez lui et j'ai tourné une vidéo Instagram avec lui. J'ai également réalisé une vidéo avec sa petite sœur Paige. Cela a éveillé leur curiosité quant au rôle d'un conseiller municipal. Je les croise souvent lors de mes tournées dans le district 2, j'ai donc été ravi lorsque les parents de Matthew m'ont proposé de l'emmener faire du porte-à-porte avec moi dans leur complexe immobilier. Il tenait mes cartes de visite, sonnait aux portes et écoutait attentivement. Je pense que cela a été une bonne expérience éducative pour ce jeune élève du JPPS.
Quant à Max, son père, le Dr Evan Blauer, m'a annoncé la bonne nouvelle : il a été sélectionné pour faire partie de l'équipe Quebec Brick. Il s'est battu pendant plus d'un an pour intégrer cette équipe. Plus de 16 gardiens de but ont passé les sélections et il a été choisi comme gardien numéro un pour tout le Québec dans sa tranche d'âge. Pour la saison hivernale de cette année, il jouera en Atom AA pour les Northstars. Max est en 4e année à JPPS et joue également au basket-ball et au flag football. Nous avons bien sûr eu une conversation agréable sur le hockey, mais Max avait vu mes affiches électorales sur les poteaux et il était curieux de savoir ce que fait un conseiller municipal. J'ai eu une conversation agréable avec lui à ce sujet et, lorsque je suis parti, il semblait avoir bien compris.
Dans neuf ans, des enfants comme Matthew et Max auront l'âge de voter. Cette opportunité se présentera beaucoup plus rapidement pour mes neuf stagiaires du lycée Bialik (et ce n'est pas fini) , dont certains travaillent avec moi depuis deux ans.
